Opening Day, Part Two

So. Oct. 1. While my friends went duck hunting, I went to work on the boat. It didn't sound like we would be fishing this morning. The wind woke me at 3:45 AM, shrieking through the trees. The marine forecast, my modern day Cassandra, said there would be no fishing.

But there was! We sneaked a day in out of Back Bay, and it sounds like we might sneak a few more in there this year. Looks like I will get another scenic tour of the Fundy Isles this fall.

I had a 10-minute stint of terror and regret at the start of the day. When I started fishing, it was supposed to be a one-year gig. Now I am in Year Five. But, the opportunity to work the ocean again this year actually sounded better as the day went on, especially once I got to sail around Bliss Island again. I love seeing new places on land, and now, for the next six months, I will get to see new places by boat.

Opening Day

Well. Here it is, just around the corner. The 2015-2016 sea urchin fishing season starts tomorrow, and I am transitioning from motojournalist to fisherman.

It's hard work, often cold, and tomorrow it's likely to be pretty soggy in the rain, but I am looking forward to it this year. The US dollar is good, so I will do well on the exchange rate.
